Child Welfare Board of Brown County, TX
Sometimes the smallest things mean everything.
Imagine having to leave home without knowing what happens next. Suddenly, the things most of us don’t think twice about matter a whole lot.
A toothbrush that’s yours. Shoes that fit. Clean clothes for school tomorrow. Something to eat tonight. A bed to crawl into at the end of the day.
They’re ordinary things. But when everything else feels uncertain, ordinary can feel like safety.
That’s where we come in.
Child welfare doesn’t look the same for every child.
Some children stay at home. Some are placed with relatives or people they already know. Others have to leave home unexpectedly. Whatever the situation, the Child Welfare Board helps make sure Brown County children have the essentials, comfort, and support they need.

Children in Kinship Care
When a child can’t safely stay with a parent, they may be placed with a grandparent, an aunt, an uncle, a family friend, or another person they already know and trust. That transition can happen quickly, and families aren’t always prepared for the sudden cost of caring for another child.

Children Removed From Home
We provide everyday essentials for local children who are removed from their home. A zippered bag with changes of clothes, shoes and socks, hygiene items, and sometimes some comfort items if needed.

Children in Homes Under Active CPS Investigation
Not every child CPS serves leaves home. Some children remain with their families while CPS works to address concerns and create a safer, more stable environment. During that time, a family may need help providing the basics that the child needs.
We step in with practical support that helps keep the child safe, comfortable, and cared for.
Different circumstances.
Same promise: when a Brown County child needs support, we help.
Help that meets a child right where they are.
We work alongside local caseworkers to respond to real needs quickly, whether that means something as simple as a toothbrush or something as essential as a safe place to sleep.
Emergency Needs
When something can’t wait. This is where most of our funding goes, because a child’s most urgent need rarely arrives on a schedule. A bed. A car seat. A prescription. Whatever the call is, we work to answer it.
The Rainbow Room
Help that’s ready before it’s asked for. We stock the Rainbow Room inside the local CPS office with new necessities caseworkers can pull at no cost, the moment a child needs them.
Birthdays
Every kid gets a birthday. Every child in care receives a gift card for theirs, so the day still belongs to them.
Christmas
Nobody gets skipped. Every child in care receives a Christmas gift, thanks to community partners who help us make it happen.
Back to School
Ready for the first day. Hygiene boxes for local campuses, plus support for kinship families getting a child outfitted for the school year.
Family Support
Steadying the household around the child. Meal boxes, gas cards, and the non-emergency help that keeps a family going.
“It isn’t really about the toothbrush.”
Or the shoes. Or the shampoo. Or even the bed. It’s what those things say to a child during a time when so much feels uncertain: Someone thought about me. Someone noticed what I needed. Someone cared enough to show up.
We can’t erase what a child has been through. But we can make sure they don’t go through it without the basic comfort and care every child deserves.
Support a local childLocal generosity becomes real help.

A child’s circumstances should never determine their opportunity.
Children don’t choose the circumstances they’re born into.
They don’t choose family crisis, financial hardship, neglect, or the events that bring CPS into their lives. But those circumstances should never determine what comes next.
Every child deserves safety. Every child deserves care. Every child deserves the chance to grow into something bigger than what happened to them.
That belief is at the heart of everything we do.
